La morte del corallo

Sono nato e vissuto nel Queensland, in Australia, (dove si trova la Grande Barriera Corallina). Verso la fine degli anni 1970 e inizion 1980, mi immergevo intorno alle isole e alla barriera quasi ogni giorno di vacanza dalla scuola e dalla università, e poi per natale per 10 anni più tardi. Da allora, ci sono ritornato ogni 4-5 anni

I cambiamenti sono stati da spezzate il cuore. Quando ritorno nei posti preferiti della mia gioventù, (i posti segreti che i turisti non conoscevano) trovo che sono semplicemente spariti. Corallo dilavato, spesso coperto da robaccia grigia.

I was born and raised in Queensland, Australia (where the Great Barrier Reef is located). In the late 1970s and early 80s I dived and snorkelled the islands and reef almost every school/university holiday, and then most Christmas breaks for 10 years after that. Since then I’ve gone back about every 4-5 years.

 

The changes have been heartbreaking. When I go back to the favorite spots of my youth (the secret spots that the tourists didn’t know) I find that they are simply gone – bleached reef, often covered by a grey goo.
